We're taking part in Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity’s family festival and fun run, RBC Race for the Kids, to raise money to help build the new Children’s Cancer Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

What a difference 10 years makes. At the time of Race for the Kids 2015, having had neurosurgery and six rounds of chemo, Chloe was in the middle of high dose chemotherapy, which kept her in hospital for 8 weeks and was gruelling, as the idea is to give the very strongest dose of chemo possible.

I was in the hospital with her that day; Chris and Danny went and supported at the race.

Today we went again-all of us this time, along with family and friends, some of who ran in 2015 and some new faces. 

It was a very emotional day today (happy tears this time) to see her participate in the race on foot for the first time. In 2015, the idea that she would be able to do that would have been unthinkable.  We are more than aware that too many children are not so lucky. 

We will remain forever grateful to those who looked after her at GOSH-they saved Chloe’s life, and there is nothing we could ever do that would adequately thank them. They continue to care for her- to monitor her development and treat her to minimise the after-effects of the cancer and the chemotherapy as best they can.

What will a cancer centre mean? In brief, research into kinder treatments and better care for more families who are going through similar experiences to ours from 2015 and since. 

I had no idea before this what a cancer diagnosis really means. It is devastating not just in terms of the diagnosis and medical treatment, it’s the emotional impact on the child and everyone around them, it’s the practical consequences of months of inpatient treatment and then what happens when treatment finishes. It’s a club you never want to join, but when you’re in it, everything makes a difference and you all did.

Today was awesome-the sun shone, thousands came to run, and as her race sidekick/chief cheerleader through the race, I couldn’t have been more proud of Chloe as she crossed the line. Last night she told me she was nervous about taking part; she’s just asked if she can do it again next year.

So-A MASSIVE thank you to you all for sponsoring the run today and to the other members of Team Chloe, who ran, walked, hobbled and cajoled/chased after their children. It’s an amazing amount of money that you’ve raised. We are blown away and truly grateful xx

Hospital life remembered....

Firstly - a huge thank you to everyone joining us in a few weeks' time or who has sponsored the team...

I found this picture the other day - it was definitely during chemo (hence the lack of hair), and I think during the time we were in for Chloe's stem cell transplant, given the feeding tube.  

Both chemo and the stem cell transplant were brutal, and she found it very hard to keep anything down.  She also hated the feeding tube - and it got pulled out on a regular basis.

We only started to get our strong-willed daughter eating and drinking again when she was watching an ipad (and parenting principles about screen time went out of the window) and eating chocolate mousse...

Anyway - what I also remember is that this stay wasn't on the oncology ward.  There wasn't a bed - so we ended up in a different part of the hospital, where the nurses weren't the specialist cancer nurses and the parents staying nearby weren't facing into the same kind of battle.  

That was 10 years ago, and now there are more diagnoses, more children and more pressure on GOSH resources - it's a great demonstration of why a children's cancer care centre is so needed x

10 years on....

2025 marks 10 years since GOSH saved our daughter Chloe's life - she was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive brain tumour on January 14th 2015, and after surgeries, lengthy hospital stays and multiple rounds of chemo, we rang the all clear bell six months later.  We are forever grateful for all the support she and we had from everyone during that time and the care she received from GOSH.

In 2015, family and friends joined us to run Race for the Kids whilst Chloe was in hospital.  

10 years on, with GOSH raising money for a Children's Cancer Centre,  we are doing it again - this time with Chloe.
