Our Group/Family
I'm taking part in RBC Race for the Kids
Five years ago, our world was turned upside down. Our little boy, Henry, just 15 months old, had a stroke. Something we never even knew could happen to a child so young. Childhood stroke is rare, but it is real — it can strike at any time, from late pregnancy right up to 18 years old. In the UK, around 400 children have a stroke every year. Behind every one of those numbers is a family living their worst nightmare.
It was a sunny Saturday when Henry suddenly became weak and droopy. He couldn’t sit or stand. He looked so groggy, so unlike himself. Within minutes we were in an ambulance, racing to A&E. Doctors quickly realised how serious his condition was and contacted Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Henry desperately needed an MRI scan — but our local hospital didn’t have one available over the weekend.
As his condition worsened, our anxiety was unbearable. We had no diagnosis, no answers, and time felt like it was running out. The decision was made to transfer him to GOSH immediately.
The moment we arrived, something lifted. As a mother, I felt an incredible sense of relief — I knew Henry was exactly where he needed to be, with the very best specialists in the country. On Sunday, he was taken for an emergency MRI which confirmed that it was a stroke.
From that moment, Henry began to receive the right treatment and care. Day by day, we watched our little boy getting stronger, surrounded by doctors and nurses whose dedication is nothing short of extraordinary. We were even so touched by one nurse that we named Henry’s little sister, Ellie, after her.
But the journey didn’t end there. Henry still goes to GOSH for tests, ECGs, heart echoes, and more. Yet through it all, the support we receive makes all the difference.
This is why we run. Every year, we join RBC Race for the Kids to raise money for the hospital that has been helping Henry for the last 5 years.
And here’s why your donations matter so much. The money raised through this race helps to beat childhood cancer — and to build a brand-new section of the hospital dedicated to cancer treatment. This will include bedrooms that don’t look or feel like hospital rooms, outdoor spaces where children can breathe and play, and amazing playrooms that bring joy and distraction during long periods of treatment. These things aren’t luxuries — they are vital for children and families who spend weeks, even months, in hospital. Together, we are helping not only to save lives, but to make those lives brighter, more hopeful, and filled with dignity
We can never thank you enough for your love, your support, and your donations.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
RBC Race for the Kids 2025
GOSH already cares for children with the hardest to treat cancers, and new treatments are giving hope to children and their families. But these advances have outstripped GOSH's current cancer facilities.
We need a new home for breakthrough treatments and pioneering research, so we can save more children's lives. And because cancer shouldn't get to steal anyone's childhood, we need a place that's more than a hospital – a place that's a school, a playground, a garden, and so much more.
Please consider sponsoring me. Together, we can build it. Together, we can help beat childhood cancer.
